One of my favourite things to do in winter time is go out for a walk in the country and end up at a nice pub. To make the day absolutely perfect, it needs to be a day that is cold, frosty, but sunny. One of those days when the ground crunches with frost beneath your feet. After a good stretch of the legs, enough to make you feel virtuous without overly wearing you out, you arrive at your chosen hostelry. As you open the door the warmth of the place hits you and you pick out a nice seat in front of the open fire. At the bar you pick up a nice pint of a hand-pulled best bitter. Perfect! So what are the greatest things about winter in Britain?
Researchers surveyed the nation to reveal the things we love about winter in this country, with seeing your first red robin (27 percent), enjoying traditional puddings such as apple crumble with custard (30 percent) and eating hot buttered toast with a cup of tea (35 percent) coming high in the list.
However, nature loving Brits voted a crisp, wintry walk in first place, with 49 percent saying wrapping up warm and going for a stroll was one of their favourite things about winter.
The anticipation of Christmas (48 percent), watching films when it’s cold and wet outside (42 percent) and wearing thick comfy jumpers (35 percent) also made the list, along with lighting candles (28 percent) and enjoying bubble baths (25 percent).
The study, by Southern Sheeting, also found that 48 percent of Brits admit they genuinely enjoy ‘winter-proofing’ their homes every year, by getting their boiler serviced, having their roof checked and getting their gardens ready for bad weather.
While 97 percent of us love the feeling of being warm and dry in our homes when the winter kicks in, and 61 percent admit they ‘nest’ during winter months.
In fact, 84 percent admitted they secretly like the fact that the winter months give them an excuse to stay inside more often than usual.Tony Hobbs, Managing Director of Southern Sheeting said: “It’s great to see so much excitement about winter months, and all the small things that the nation loves about the season, from eating comfort food, having lazy days at home, and nesting by ensuring homes are ready for winter. “We all know the elements can take their toll on our homes during the colder months, but it’s important to spot any problems early on so you can plan to fix them. That way you can rest easy and truly enjoy all the other wonderful features of winter like going for a walk on a cold crisp day and cooking up a Sunday roast in the warmth of your home.”
The data also revealed that 89 percent of the 1,500 Brits polled love the fact that winter means being at home more and therefore getting to spend extra time with their families. And 26 percent admit that, when winter is over, they miss the cosiness that the season brings.
