For many Brits, the pub is far more than somewhere to grab a quick pint – it’s a place steeped in comfort, familiarity and community spirit. While trendy cocktails and gastro-style menus may dominate some modern venues, new research suggests the nation’s dream local is refreshingly traditional. Picture a sunny beer garden buzzing in summer, a roaring fire in winter, the smell of a proper Sunday roast drifting from the kitchen and a friendly landlord greeting regulars by name. Add a jukebox playing favourite classics, sport on the big screen and a bar stocked with quality beers and ice-cold lager, and you’re getting close to what Brits consider the perfect pub. According to a new study by Star Pubs, it’s these simple, nostalgic touches – along with hearty pub grub and a warm welcome – that still define the ultimate British boozer.
Forget fancy gastro pubs – the nation’s “perfect pub” has salted nuts, a juke box, ice cold lager on tap and a landlord who knows your name (and your drinks order.)The findings from Star Pubs reveal what modern Brits deem to be the “perfect pub”, and there’s not a charcuterie board or Aperol spritz in sight. In fact, according to Brits, features of the PERFECT British pub include a weekly pub quiz (24%), sport playing on a big screen (20%), a jukebox (18%) and a CRACKING roast on a Sunday. (46%). Brits also want fish and chips (28%), water bowls for your dog (20%), salted nuts (17%) and a Ploughman’s lunch (17%).
On average, Brits visit the pub twice a week, with two thirds (65%) admitting they look forward to a trip to the boozer all day. 83% go a step further say their local is their happy place, with 75% saying it is the heart of the community. Three quarters (74%) consider their landlord to be a key pillar in the community. It’s no surprise that 85% think the pub is a Great British Institution, with two thirds (59%) admitting they would miss their local, if it closed.
To give Brits the chance to build their own dream pub, Star Pubs is launching the Dream Pub Studio, which is an online interactive digital game where people can interact with a Sims-style pub builder.
Users can choose the walls, floors, décor, food, drinks and even bar staff. And once the design is ready, it will become 3D so you can share your virtual ‘dream pub’ with your friends.
Hance McPherson, Head of Licensee Attraction at Star Pubs, which commissioned the study said: “Pubs have always held a special place in British life, and this research shows just how important they remain to our communities. From open fires and great Sunday roasts to friendly landlords. We’re now giving everyone the chance to design their perfect local.”
